Dynamical modelling of a reactive extrusion process: Focus on residence time distribution in a fully intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruder and application to an alginate extraction process ArchiMer
Baron, Regis; Vauchel, Peggy; Kaas, Raymond; Arhaliass, Abdellah; Legrand, Jack.
The context of this study is the modelling of reactive extrusion process based on an alginate extraction protocol. Residence Time Distribution (RTD) is one important part to predict the kinetics of reactive compounds. A simple model is proposed to predict RTD in fully intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruders without reaction. This model, which can be easily extended to reactive case in a future work, is based on the extension of an axial dispersion model, including control parameters (screw speed and flow rate) and geometrical parameters (screw profile and die design). Simulations were performed for various operating and geometrical conditions so as to illustrate possibilities offered by the proposed model. Validation was conducted for two different...

Ecología trófica de la merluza común (Merluccius hubbsi) del Mar Argentino. Parte 3. Consumo anual de alimento a nivel poblacional y su relación con la explotación de las pesquerías multiespecíficas. OceanDocs
Prenski, L.B.; Angelescu, V..
The English contents gives a general view on the topics treated in this contribution developed mainly on the basis of a quantitative and ecological analysis of trophic relationships in the Argentinian Continental Shelf, in which common hake and its food species are involved (anchovy, mictophids, small fishes, squids and macrozooplankton crustaceans). The most original part consist in the application of bioenergetic and simulation models for estimating the annual food consumption by individuals and by stocks of common hake during 1970-1987, considering at the same time, the effects of commercial catches on the stockbiomasses in predator-prey relationships. From this point of view three trophic-fishery relationships are evident, namely: "Common...

ECONOMIC INCENTIVES FOR PST ADOPTION BY MIDWEST HOG PRODUCERS AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Anderson, David P.; Peel, Derrell S.; Phillips, Mike.
A whole-farm simulation model is used to analyze the impacts of PST adoption on representative farms in Missouri and Indiana. Farmers who do not adopt experience lower average annual net cash farm incomes than adopters. Lower feed prices and/or an average PST/feed response decrease the incentive adopt. Payment of a 5 percent carcass merit premium (CMP) and/or higher grain prices greatly increase the economic incentive to adopt.

Economic optimization of the number of recipients in bovine embryo transfer programs Scientia Agricola
Beltrame,Renato Travassos; Barioni,Luis Gustavo; Maestri,Breno Dala; Quirino,Celia Raquel.
Purchase and maintenance of recipient females account for a large proportion of the costs and determine the number of calves that can be produced in an embryo transfer program. However, the large variability of embryo production by the donors and the need to purchase and synchronize the recipients before knowing the number of embryos collected make it difficult for the decision maker to identify the ideal number of recipient females to allocate. An ex-ante evaluation to determine the optimal number of recipient females was carried out through a sensitivity analysis for the ratio between the number of recipients and donors in a simulation model. The variability for the number of embryos collected was accounted for by applying the Monte Carlo simulation...

Effect of Site Specific Weather Conditions on the Energy Consumption of a High Temperature Continuous Flow Corn Dryer CIGR Journal
de la Torre, Diego Antonio.
The estimation of drying energy consumption is important for grain elevators and the grain processing industry in order to compute the drying cost and also for properly planning the energy supply during the drying season. It is also important for making energy policies related to agriculture. Locations with different weather should have different drying performances but this effect was not sufficiently studied in previous research. The main goal of this study was to determine the energy requirement for drying yellow dent corn with a continuous flow high temperature dryer for ten locations in Argentina with different weather conditions. The study was carried out using historical weather data of ten locations scattered through the corn producing region of...

Effects of maintenance management procedures in sugarcane mechanic harvesting system equipment REA
Faria,Luís F. F.; Silva,João E. A. R..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of modifying the maintenance programming of equipment used in sugarcane mechanical harvesting, by transferring actions that can be planned to periods when machines are inactive due to meal breaks and other working shift transitions stoppages. A simulation model was developed to represent the maintenance procedures of combines, haulouts, and other vehicles used by a harvest team. Scenarios were tested using alternatives for interventions such as refueling, lubrication and harvester blade replacement, enabling strategies to be focused towards better utilization of cutting, loading, and transport (CLT) system equipment. As a result, it was possible to remove one combine and two haulouts, while...

Endogamy and genetic variability in selective mating using distribution of extremes R. Bras. Zootec.
Jangarelli,Marcelo; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico.
The objective of this study was to evaluate selective mating using distribution of extremes, among other mating strategies, on its ability to decrease the endogamy and the loss of genetic variability. The genetic simulation system (Genesys) was used to simulate two genomes (each one with a single characteristic whose distinction was the value of heritability) and the base and original populations. Each initial population was submitted to assisted selection by markers for ten consecutive generations. For evaluation of strategies, the estimated parameters were phenotypic value, endogamy and additive genetic variance, in different family sizes, for both characteristics. In all scenarios combining heritability and family sizes, the selective mating was...

Entry, Exit, and Structural Change in Pennsylvania's Dairy Sector AgEcon
Stokes, Jeffrey R..
Data on the number of Pennsylvania dairy farms by size category are analyzed in a Markov chain setting to determine factors affecting entry, exit, expansion, and contraction within the sector. Milk prices, milk price volatility, land prices, policy, and cow productivity all impact structural change in Pennsylvania's dairy sector. Stochastic simulation analysis suggests that the number of dairy farms in Pennsylvania will likely fall by only 2.0 percent to 2.5 percent annually over the next 20 years, indicating that dairy farming in Pennsylvania is likely to be a significant enterprise for the state in the foreseeable future.

Estimacion de corrientes marinas en el Golfo de Batabano OceanDocs
Arriaza Oliveros, L.; Simanca Cardenas, Y.; Rodas Fernández, L.; Milian, D..
The simulation operational tool known as SIMulación de COrrientes (SIMCO) is a part of a methodology to forecast marine currents into cuban shelf. This tool is based on a lineal model. Gulf of Batabanó is an almost closed shallow water body whit flat bottom, that includes a surface of 20 850 km2 and its average depth is about 6 m. This work offers the results of such a comparison between the results of the application of SIMCO to Gulf of Batabanó and current measurements. SIMCO is a good representation of the marine currents inside of the gulf, the overestimation mean error is equal to 3.8 cm/s for the south boundary of gulf when SIMCO run whit a kind of horizontal resolution of 2 nm and the overestimation errors decreases when the horizontal resolution...

Estimating effective population size of large marine populations, is it feasible? ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Lorance, Pascal; Berthele, Olivier; Trenkel, Verena; Waples, Robin S.; Lamy, Jean-baptiste.
stainable exploitation of marine populations is a challenging task relying on information about their current and past abundance. Fisheries‐related data can be scarce and unreliable making them unsuitable for quantitative modelling. One fishery independent method that has attracted attention in this context consists in estimating the effective population size (Ne), a concept founded in population genetics. We reviewed recent empirical studies on Ne and carried out a simulation study to evaluate the feasibility of estimating Ne in large fish populations with the currently available methods. The detailed review of 26 studies found that published empirical Ne values were very similar despite differences in species and total population sizes (N). Genetic...

Estimating the effects of population size and type on the accuracy of genetic maps Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ferreira,Adésio; Silva,Marcia Flores da; Silva,Luciano da Costa e; Cruz,Cosme Damião.
Based on simulation studies, it was shown that the type and size of experimental populations can exert an influence on the accuracy of genetic maps. A hypothetical genome map (one chromosome with nine equidistant molecular markers) was generated for the following population types: F2 with dominant and co-dominant markers, backcrossing, recombinant inbred lines (RIL) and double-haploid. The population sizes were 50, 100, 150, 200, 500 and 1000 individuals and 100 simulations were made for each population. The inaccuracies of the populations with the lowest number of individuals were shown by inversions in the order of the markers and the establishment of more than one linkage group in up to 38% of the simulations, depending on the population type. Stress...

Estimating the Fair Insurance Premium for Dungeness Crab Yields in the Western U.S. Coast AgEcon
Liu, Chia-Lan; Richardson, James W.; Leatham, David J..
The Dungeness is a popular food and the most commercially important crab in the western states in the U.S. Like all agricultural production, the crab fisherman face yield risks and must manage these risks. In addition to weather risk, crab fisherman may experience low yields if the crabs are over fished in previous years. Farmers for many traditional agricultural crops can purchase crop insurance to insure against low yields. However, crab fishermen at this time do not have this option. The purpose of this paper is to estimate a fair insurance premium based on the historical yields of the Dungeness crab. This information can then be used in risk/return models for crab fishing to determine if it would be optimal for fisherman to purchase crop insurance. An...

Estimation of population profiles of two strains of the fly Megaselia scalaris (Diptera: Phoridae) by bootstrap simulation BJB
MANZATO,A. J.; TADEI,W. J.; CORDEIRO,J. A..
Based on experimental population profiles of strains of the fly Megaselia scalaris (Phoridae), the minimal number of sample profiles was determined that should be repeated by bootstrap simulation process in order to obtain a confident estimation of the mean population profile and present estimations of the standard error as a precise measure of the simulations made. The original data are from experimental populations founded with SR and R4 strains, with three replicates, which were kept for 33 weeks by serial transfer technique in a constant temperature room (25 ± 1.0°C). The variable used was population size and the model adopted for each profile was a stationary stochastic process. By these simulations, the three experimental population profiles were...
